Working as one of the most iconic duos, Inez and Vindooh have forged one of the most unique, personal, and creative unions seen in the fashion industry. Their partnership has paved the way to a remarkable body of work that spans across endless global campaigns for major advertising clients such as Balenciaga, Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent. They have also photographed several editorial assignments for magazines such as American Vogue, French Vogue, and W. Inez and Vinoodh’s partnership has firmly established the duo among the most successful and powerful image-makers in the fashion industry.

Inez van Lamsweerde was born on the 25th September 1963 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Vinoodh Matadin was born on the 29th September 1961, also in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Not much is known about the pair’s childhood or their passions growing up, as they are very private about their history.

The couple currently live in New York with their son, Charles Star Matadin.

Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin both attended the Vogue Academy of Fashion Design in their native Amsterdam in 1986. The couple met here when they were each dating separate people. The iconic duo first started to collaborate together when Inez, who went on to earn a masters in photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, was commissioned to shoot Vinoodh’s clothing line, Lawina.

Unfortunately, the label folded in 1990, but by this time they had become a couple, with Vinoodh also working as Inez’s part-time stylist.

It was through studying at the prestige school that they found their aesthetic for photography.

Their first big break came n the mid-1990s, when fashion magazines were full of documentary-style raw imagery. Inez and Vinoodh’s highly manipulated and surreal editorial series “For Your Pleasure,” was published in the April 1994 issue of The Face. Not only did it kick start their career, but it also broke the mold that the fashion industry had become so accustomed to. It wasn’t long after this that major fashion titles came calling. Inez and Vinoodh were soon slipping effortlessly between their passion, fine art, and fashion from their new home base in New York.

The magazine, Visionaire, was the iconic duo’s first publication in the United States, and they continue to work with Inez and Vinoodh to this day, as well as its sister magazine, the quarterly V. They have also shot for American Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

Some of their most notable achievements include photographing four of The New York Times Magazine’s renowned “Great Performers In Film!” portfolios. In 2007 Inez and Vinoodh were guest photographers of the legendary Pirelli calendar, a photo shoot that would cite a cast of actresses, both young and old, as their erotic heroines. Such photographs included their black and white close-ups of Sofia Loren, Penélope Cruz, Naomi Watts, Hilary Swank and Lou Doillon.

Inez and Vinoodh’s also have an extensive commercial success, photographing for some of the most prestigious fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Balmain, Nina Ricci, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Isabel Marant, Giuseppe Zanotti, Lanvin Homme, Miu Miu, Christian Dior Joaillarie, Gucci, Chloé, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Balenciaga, Yohji Yamamoto, Chanel, Roberto Cavalli, Donna Karan, DKNY, Stella McCartney, Brioni, Moschino, Loewe, Mulberry, Emanuel Ungaro, Louis Vuitton and Helmut Lang.

The famous duo is turning their attention beyond the frame and into the marketplace with their own products, including a fragrance and a fine jewelry line.

Inez and Vinoodh are most famously known for their use of digital. It has helped them to create their signature collections from high-gloss fashion images to the surreal, often called disturbing, manipulated human forms that appear in their personal work. The use of technology in their images has always been a means to express a searching imagination and never the object of fascination itself. For Inez and Vinoodh, it’s all about the emotion in their image, and bringing that out.

Over the course of many years of shooting together, Inez and Vinoodh have developed a unique approach to taking photos. This approach allows them to focus on a single subject from multiple angles.

When they started their collaboration, Vinoodh was originally credited as the stylist, and Inez the photographer. When they began shooting for Vogue, they began to use a joint credit.

The iconic duo’s birthdays are 3 days apart – Inez September 25th, Vinoodh 29th. They believe in star signs, making them both Libra. It is said that the romantic combination of two Libras is understood to be one of the most agreeable, romantic and well-balanced relationships out of all the star signs. Characteristics of the star sign include being intellectual, refined, communicative, social and artistic.

In 2004, Inez and Vinoodh filmed famous model Kate Moss dancing to Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean during a shoot for Harper’s Bazaar in LA. At the time, it was rare to see Kate on film.

In 2011, Inez and Vinoodh released their retrospective book, Pretty Much Everything, which featured contributions from figures like novelist Bruce Sterling and pop singer Lady Gaga.
