INTRO

Kai Z Feng is a fashion photographer that has photographed of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, from names like Natalie Portman, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, and Jennifer Lopez. Rising to face the top of the game at just 24 years of age, the young photographer has taken the world by storm with his unique style and eye for fashion photography. He has photographed for ad campaigns and magazine spreads worldwide, and is highly sought after by major fashion brands. Kai Z Feng, as a photographer, isn’t after the perfect celebrity selfie nor is he naïve enough to focus on just his success; his goals and wants are to keep pushing the boundaries of his art and capture talent in an original way.

                                                                           

LIFE

Kai Z Feng was born in Shanghai, China in 1982. Although he is known to the world as Kai Z Feng, his  Chinese name is Feng Zhikai. The young photographer wasn’t born into a rich family and didn’t have much in life, instead, he was born into an ordinary Chinese family. At a young age, he was exposed to a creative environment with his parents teaching at the Anhui Fine Arts College. This was where he adopted a love from painting at a very young age.

Although his childhood was rich with creativity, growing up in China was complicated. Kai Z Feng saw the divorce of his parents at a young age, which resulted in the separating parents not having much money. As a result, Kai Z Feng moved around a lot and never really had a serious home. Kai Z Feng has recalled in many interviews that the only thing he treasures about his birthplace is his parents.

Due to his moving around a lot, it was his dream to settle down in London when he hit his teenage years. Luckily for his, that’s exactly where his career took him.

EDUCATION

Kai Z Feng graduated from the Shanghai Arts and Crafts College with a major in fine art at the age of 17. It didn’t take long before wanted to start his life and pursue his dream in graphic designing. At the age of 18, he moved to London to chase a career he thought could be fulfilled by education. He discovered there, whilst photographing some of his schoolmates, that he had a love for photography.

His education would have taken him further as he had a scholarship to study in New York, but unfortunately, 9/11 happened and foreign scholarships were canceled. Kai Z Feng had to choose between working and continuing his education at this point in his life. He had received an offer for a graphic design job in London so he took it. That’s how Kai Z Feng moved into photography.

CAREER

Kai Z Feng did not have his sights set on photography when he arrived in London, he moved for graphic design, which was his current passion at the time. With an intense love for music and drawn to the British rock n’ roll scene, he began capturing London’s talent through the lens of a camera. He happened to photograph Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe, and by chance, the photographs were spotted by an editor from Vogue Italia.

With his natural eye for photography and capturing celebrities in fashion, he quickly became a celebrity favorite with a seemingly never-ending list of A-List sitters, such as Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, Nicholas Hoult, Natalie Portman, Amanda Seyfried and Adam Brody. Despite the reputation Kai Z Feng has gained, he remains humble in his career.

“It’s not the names of the people I photograph which make me feel like I’ve made it. It’s the image itself that does and whether I like the picture or not.”

Before long, at just the age of 24, Kai Z Feng started injecting his unique style of artistic vision into the fashion world. With him, he brought a youthful energy and sense of beauty that quickly won him some of the biggest assignments of his career with international brands including Burberry, Aquascutum, Hugo Boss, Elie Saab, Thomas Pink, Burberry, Shanghai Tang, and Jaeger.

His career only got better. At just 29 years of age, Kai Z Feng became a regular contributor to such illustrious publications as British Vogue, French Vogue, Vogue Italia, L’Uomo Vogue, Vogue Nippon, Vogue China, V Magazine and Vanity Fair.

Now, the young photography is working on more of his own travel photography, people and things that inspire him. He has a deep exploration of his own personal work that he is embarking on and would like to get involved with organizations that help children and young people who are growing up facing the hardship of poverty and reduced opportunities.

COLLECTION

Kai Z Feng is famously known through the fashion industry for capturing the celebrity and bringing out their true colors. With a background in graphic designing, he likes to combine both his photography and other elements of his passions to create the perfect image.

He likes to include diversity throughout his work and is constantly inspired by so many cultures, ethnicities, and identities. Kai Z Feng has stated numerous times that he would like to see more of that inclusion throughout the industry.

1. While Feng is known for having a collection of selfies with the celebrities he captures, he points out he only snaps a photo “when they’ve matched my expectations of who they are.”

2. “I don’t think of myself as having conquered the fashion world, but blessed to be part of it and doing well,” Feng told NBC News. “I’m not sure there’s a ‘key’ to success, but for me, I try to stay passionate about what I do and learn from every opportunity.”

3. Kai Z Feng prepares for a photoshoot depending on the project. He is mostly involved in the creative side rather than production.  He spends his prep time making mood boards and working on deciding exactly how he will bring his and the client’s vision to life.

4. Kai Z Feng would definitely like to see more successful photographers coming up from more diverse backgrounds, but he also thinks we shouldn’t focus too much on where artists come from over the work they produce.

5. His favorite brand to work with is Burberry. It was really the first brand who saw the value of his pictures when he was new to the whole industry and it taught him about brand spirit, commercial value, and teamwork. Kai Z Feng thinks they are still constantly searching for new and exciting talent.
