Heidi Klum is a multi-talented, multi-faceted German-American supermodel who has made a significant mark in the entertainment industry in many different arenas. She is also a business woman, a fashion designer, a producer, an author, a television personality and an actress and she was the first German model to make it as a Victoria’s Secret Angel.

She also became the judge and host of several reality television shows and is one of the few model-turned television personalities to get nominated and to win the coveted Emmy Awards.

With estimated earnings of about $20 million in May 2011, she was ranked second on the Forbes list of the world’s highest earning supermodels that year. She also continued to be on the list for several consecutive years.

She had a 13 year run with the lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret and she turned into a successful business woman after that.

Personal Life

Heidi Klum was born on the 1st of June, 1973 in Bergisch Gladbach, which is a small town outside the Cologne district of West Germany. Her mother, Erna was a hairdresser and her father Gunther Klum was a cosmetics company executive.

It was one of her friends who convinced her to enter national modelling contest called “Model 92”, and as fate would have it, out of 25000 contestants who entered the show, Klum was declared as the winner on the 29th of April, 1992. As the award, Klum was offered a lucrative modelling contract by Thomas Zeumer, CEO of Metropolitan models New York, worth $300, 000. She accepted the contract a few months after graduating from school and the rest as they is history.

The win also got her on the Gottschalk Late Night Show which was German talk show hosted by Thomas Gottschalk.

She got married to stylist Ric Pipino in 1997 but they got divorced in 2002.

Later in March of 2003, Klum started dating Flavio Briatore who was the Italian Managing Director of Renault’s Formula One Team. In December, the same year, she became pregnant as well but soon after the couple announced that they were splitting ways.

A little later, she got in to a relationship with singer and musician Seal, who was present during her daughter Helene Klum’s (Leni’s) birth in May 2004. Rumour has it that Briatore, who is the actual father of Leni, is not involved in her life at all. In fact, Heidi Klum has stated vehemently that “Seal is Leni’s father”.

Klum and Seal went on to get engaged in December in the same year. Seal proposed on a glacier in Whistler, British Columbia. They got married on a beach in Mexico on the 10th of May 2005 and together they have three children; two sons and a daughter. Henry Günther Ademola Dashtu Samuel who was born in 2005, Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel born in 2006 and Lou Sulola Samuel born in 2009.

Later in 2009, Klum also officially adopted Seal’s surname and became Heidi Samuel. In December, Seal also adopted Leni and her last name was changed to Samuel as well.

However, after almost seven years of marriage, the couple announced that they were separating on the 22nd of January, 2012. Three months later, Klum filed for divorce and it was finalized on 14th October, 2014. She also has her name restored to her birth name Heidi Klum.

According to several sources, Klum was in a relationship with her bodyguard Martin Kristen from 2012 until 2014 as well.

Career in the entertainment industry

Heidi Klum started off her career on a massive gig as mentioned earlier. With that kind of a boost early on, she soon made it to the covers of the French, German, Portuguese and Spanish Vogue magazines as well as many others including ELLE, Marie Claire, InStyle and the Russian Harper’s Bazaar.

She became hugely popular after she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and also became widely acclaimed for her work with Victoria’s Secret. She was a Victoria’s Secret Angel for almost 13 years and she also hosted their fashion shows in the years 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

In the year 2010, a gossip column in the New York Post reported that Klum would be ending her long run with Victoria’s Secret which was later confirmed by Klum herself. In her official statement regarding the confirmation, she said, “All good things have to come to an end. I will always love Victoria and never tell her secret. It’s been an absolute amazing time!”

With a highly successful modelling career, she became the host as well as the judge of the television reality shows Germany’s Next Top Model and Project Runway. She was also the executive producer of Project Runway which was a US based reality show that featured fashion designers competing with one another in order to win the opportunity to showcase their line at the New York Fashion Week. The show also gave the winner the money to launch their own fashion line. This got her an Emmy nomination in 2008 and an Emmy Award win in 2013 for “Outstanding Host for a Reality Competition Program” which she shared with co-host Tim Gunn.

She had also signed a 20-episode deal with Lifetime to host a new show called Seriously Funny Kids.

In all, Klum had the privilege of being nominated for six Emmy Awards as well as some other coveted awards for her work in television including the German Television Awards for Germany’s Next Top Model, the Teen Choice Awards and the Online Film And Television Award all for Project Runway.

In 2013, Klum was reported to be signed in as one of the four new judges for the American reality show America’s Got Talent along with Mel B, Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell.

Klum has also worked as the spokes model for Dannon, H&M, Braun and Liz Claiborne . She has appeared in a number of commercials for some of the biggest names in various industries including McDonald’s, Jordache and Volkswagen.

She became the official ambassador for Barbie on their 50th anniversary and was the face of a Givenchy’s fragrance “Amarige”.

She has worked with a lot of well-known fashion photographers for her husband’s Sports Illustrated shoots. She was also the subject and object of famous artist Joanne Gair on his body painting works in several of his editions in between 1997 and 2010.

Apart from her modelling work, she has also appeared in several television shows including Sex And the City, Spin City, Yes Dear and How I Met Your Mother. Some of the movies she made appearances in were Ella Enchanted, Blow Dry and The Life And Death Of Peter Sellers. She also made small guest appearances in The Devil Wears Prada and Perfect Stranger.

Among music videos, she appeared in Jamiroquai’s “Love Foolosophy”, Kelis’s “Young, Fresh N’ New” and also her then husband Seal’s music video for his song “Secret”. It was part of his 2010 album “Seal 6: Commitment” and the video features the married couple sharing intimate moments together while naked in bed, the concept of which was Klum’s idea.

In 2008, with estimated earnings of about $16 million, Klum became the highest paid supermodel of the world on the Forbes list.

In the same year, she was featured on several iconic commercials including Volkswagen, Guitar Hero World Tour and McDonald’s.

Later in 2009, she became the subject of a photo-book called “Heidilicious” released by photographer Rankin which featured the model as “often nude”.

She also starred in several web-based videos including “SPIKED HEEL: Supermodels Battle the Forces of Evil” where she was portrayed as “The Kluminator” with a stylish sidekick “The Sassy Superhero’ played by model Coco Rocha.

In 2010, Klum became the face as well as the creative advisor of the European cosmetics brand Astor for which she even designs new products and collections.

Later in 2011, Klum began new partnerships with Amazon.com and New Balance to launch her new clothing line.

Designing and business ventures

Heidi Klum is also a fashion designer and has designed several clothing lines including one for men for the German mail-order catalog “Otto”. She has also designed a clothing line for Jordache and a swimsuit line to be featured in the 2002 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Apart from clothing, she has designed shoes for the company Birkenstock and jewelry for Mouawad.

The Victoria’s Secret Lingerie line “The Body” is another collection that Klum co-designed with other designers. The collection was actually named after her nickname that she got after her first runway show with the brand.

She has also designed makeup as part of the “Very Sexy Makeup Collection” for Victoria’s Secret which is titled “The Heidi Klum Collection”. It debuted in Fall of 2007 and a second run of the collection was further released in Fall of 2008.

Among fragrances, Klum has two to her credit; one called “Heidi Klum” and the other called “Me”.

At the US Open in 2008, Klum designed a screen-printed T shirt for social purposes. The T shirt which was sold at the shops during the US Open, featured butterfly prints and all the proceeds from its sale went to a non-profit organization that maintained at the park that held the US Open.

In 2010, Klum launched two lines of maternity clothes as well with two big names in the maternity wear industry. They were called “Lavish by Heidi Klum” for the brand A Pea In The Pod and “Loved by Heidi Klum” for Motherhood Maternity. Being a different move in the fashion industry, Heidi Klum said about her collections, “I experienced fashion challenges during my four pregnancies and combined my knowledge of what works in terms of style, comfort and practicality to create these lines.”

Later the same year, Klum launched a line of active wear for women with New Balance on Amazon.com and in 2015 she launched her own line of lingerie titled “Heidi Klum intimates” in Melbourne Australia.

Other notable work

Apart from modelling or acting or designing Heidi Klum also likes to paint and write. A lot of her paintings were featured across many art magazines in the US. In 2002, she had painted a sculpture called “Dog With Butterflies” which she dedicated to the work of the rescue dogs that played an important role in the September 11 incident aftermath.

In 2004, Klum co-authored a book with ELLE magazine editor Alexandra Postman titled “Heidi Klum’s Body of Knowledge” which is basically a biography of Klum’s life and includes her personal advice on how to become successful.

In addition to writing and painting, Klum has also lent her voice for some songs. In 2006, Klum released her first single called “Wonderland” which she actually wrote for a television commercial for “Douglas”. She also sang the duet “Wedding Day” with her then husband Seal which he wrote for their wedding.

Interesting facts

–    Klum has had her fair share of rejections. She posed nude for the 2009 cover of the German GQ, and neither of Karl Lagerfeld the designer or Claudia Schiffer the supermodel, actually knew who she was because Klum has never worked Paris. Klum said that even though she tried she never got booked by anyone in Paris, Berlin or New York City. Rumour has it that Michael Kors, who actually saw her in his designs when she was just 20, rejected her and said “thanks, but no thanks”.

–    Heidi Klum’s right leg is insured for $1.2 million and her left leg for $1 million because she has a scar on her left leg.

–    About 90% of the men who watched her on the 2006 World Cup Group Draw from over 150 countries said that “they would like to have relations with her on the spot”. However Klum insisted that she was not offended by this kind of an objectification and saw it as just a part of her job.

–    Klum throws some of the craziest and fun Halloween parties. She takes her parties quite seriously as well and starts planning well in advance.
